Explain.

If I could make friends with the characters in the novel, it would most probably be Boo Radley. At the very start of the novel he was introduced as one of the possible, indirect character who broke Jem’s arm, yet as the story moved on, I was made to think he was strangely frightening and suspicious as he was a recluse who did not appear in public, and the rumours against him were terrifying. I suspected he was the story’s antagonist, and from the chapter where Jem touched the front door of his house I thought Boo would soon strike back with some evil deed against the kids. However this proved to be incorrect as later on into the story, it was getting progressively obvious that Boo Radley was not as scary as everyone had said him to be, but instead was a kind and careful man who was affectionate and protective over Jem and Scout especially. This was already something I feel would make a good friend. He showed concern and consideration for the Jem and Scout, and the effort he had placed into making them pleased should be admired at. During the fire incident, he also placed a wet blanket on Scout’s shoulders to comfort her, all these done without her notice and knowledge, and this showed he did good and cared for the children even though until then he had not received a single thank-you from them. He placed the children's comfort and safety over his own and was not expecting a return. This quality of Boo Radley is one that will prove if someone is your friend or not, whether he leaves you in the lurch when you are in trouble, or shows his concern when you are in need.

The most important incident which proved that Boo Radley would be a good friend to make was when Bob Ewell tried to kill the two siblings Scout and Jem, if not for a timely intervention by Boo Radley, who without hesitation bravely entered the fight scene, robbed Bob of the knife, and in the process, injuring himself, just to protect them from danger. His courageous act was done at the stake of his own life. He was a brave, loving man who just is misunderstood terribly by the Maycomb society, and hence I pity yet admire him for his strength and love. Thus I believe that he would be the friend I would like to make in the novel.

Interpersonal: Conduct an interview with a friend (not from HCI) or family member. Find out from their point of view on prejudice and discrimination. Either record the interview or write out the interview transcript.

This I thought ,was quite of a challenging task for me, as I had expected to not find people whom I could interview. But ultimately, my friend accepted my request of me interviewing him. :) This is the rough interview transcript:

Myself: So what do you think about prejudice and discrimination in society, before and now?

Friend (he prefers to stay anonymous) : Prejudice and discrimation are two very closely linked subject, and it would be a very sensitive object to talk about , especially in a country like Singapore. I feel that prejudice, a way is to judge someone differently because of their race, class or anything that could be different from normal societal views is an incorrect way of judging people. While discrimination is a behavior (an action), with reference to unequal treatment of people because they are members of a particular group, or having prejudice against them. If Singapore was to be like Maycomb County, but where people of different races lived together, there would most likely be havoc and no peace. (No further comments...)

But anyway, thanks my friend! Now I have completed both my tasks and can finally take a break. That's all for now!

~Wei Ren

My Learning Profile

My Learning Profile

Firstly, this is my learning profile. Even though I have done this test a couple of times, and is unsure of previous results, but as it can be seen from above, I have realised that I am not particularly strong in any of the areas, but the stronger ones are interpersonal (people smart), intrapersonal (myself smart) and kinaesthetic (body smart). I feel that this test has allowed me to notice in what areas I am stronger at, but mostly it can be seen as being average in all of them. This learning profile also reflects my personal learning style, and allows me to further develop some of the skills to aid my learning process.

~Wei Ren :)

P.S. National identity specially referes to the distinction of specific features of a group. A vast array of different criteria are used, with a range of different applications. Like this, small differences in pronunciation or different dialects can be sufficient to categorize someone as a member of a different nation. On the other hand, some persons can have diverging personalities and beliefs, live in different places and speak different languages and still see each other as members of the same nation. Furthermore, there are cases in which a group of persons defines itself as a nation not based on the features they have, but for the features they lack or dislike. The feeling of belonging to a nation is then used as a defense against other groups, even if these other groups would appear to be closer in matters of ideology cultural practices. Finally, members of a nation can emphasize their common history despite ethnical and linguistic differences. (source: wikipedia)

If according to this definition, what would be Singapore's national identity? This was one of the main questions that was raised in the recent mock Socratic Seminar held in class. Would "use of Singlish" be considered one of Singapore's unique identity? If languages can be considered as a way to categorize someone to be a member of a particular nation, then the use of Singlish in the local community would be a valid example of Singapore's national identity.

Then once again, another classmate raised if "uniquely Singaporean food" can be considered as a identity? If strictly according to the definitions which I had mentioned before this, this would not be applicable. But arguably, eating is one of Singaporeans' favourite hobby. With the huge variety of local dishes, surely food can be considered as a unique method of identifying Singapore. Here is an example, the Chilli Crab, many people who thinks of this would almost immediately relate it to Singapore, and of how unique the dish can be.

So this are some of the few unique national identities of Singapore. This Sec 2s were strongly encouraged to attend the concert as it was a part of our school's Art Elective and Enrichment (AEA).

The cause for this concert was to raise funds for the school's needy pupil fund, which I find is extremely meaningful. If we are able to enjoy great music and help raise funds at the same time, why no participate in such a cause for the school. In addition, this school-organised concert also allowed us to better appreciate musical art, and the beauty of such.

The hard work and the continuous practice the students have put in for the wonderful performance should be lauded and appreciated. I hope the school would be able to organise moreof such events in the near future for us students to enjoy (:

Photos from the concert (2 photos):
(to be uploaded)

New Updated Blog :D (time to be happy x3 )

YES its true. After almost half a year (or is it more than half a year? hmm...) of going on a hiatus, I am finally back blogging. This affects my life and death, which in other words, my marks, thus I am going to be very, very serious about this blogging stuff.

So where should I start? Oh yes, on my blog updates, this is the various edits I had done to my blog:

1. The blog skin
Oh this is so obvious. Instead of the old boring piano music one which I had used last year, I had found another blog skin for my wonderful blog (: With some minor tweaks here and there, I had the blog up and running in no time. :D
(source: http://www.blogskins.com)

2. My livelier tone
In the start of the new year, I have decided to inject life into my blogging tone, so as to make myself less emo, and the others happier :D Its a win-win situation (:

3. More colourful "feel"
I have decided to make my life a bit happier. That's all.

Yeah, that should be it. So here is the start to my blog of 2010!

(note: the timing of the posts have been altered due to error in previous posts, thus explaining all the posts being spammed out at the same time (: kudos to all!)

Start of Sec 2 :D

----------------------------------------------- dividing line (haha) -----------------------------------------------

Post-National Day CIP Activity

Today was the day of the national day celebrations in school. To let us reach out to help the less fortunate, this year's national dat theme, the school has orgainised a CIP event for us, which is newspaper colection at Taman Juring. Thre funds colected from the sale of the newspaper will be used to help organise a camp for underprivileged children in the Taman Jurong Constituency.

Early this morning, after the wonderful display by other fellow schoolmates, we set off towards our destination, almost leaving some of our classmates behind:P I was put in to Timothy Ling's group and we were allocated block 151. With only 6 floors and 76 units, we finished in under an hour and had to wait for the other groups.

From this newspaper collection CIP, I learnt that as Singaporeans, we must give a helping hand to the needy and less fortunate. Although I had met with some residents who were reluctant to work with us, it was a pleasure to be able collect the newspapers and old clothes. Some residents very willingly handed us stacks of newspapers, while some others had left them outside their home for us to collect. It was heart-warming to see that Singaporeans are so wllingly to help.

Although it was tiring having to carry the newspapers and the clothes, I had gained a valuable lesson from this CIP event.

I would like to wish everyone a happy national day. That is Robert Frost of course! The first poem I read that was written by him was "The Road Not Taken". I feel that his poems are full of meaning and give insights on how we, ourselves lead our lives. Though his work is principally associated with the life and landscape of New England, and though he was a poet of traditional verse forms and metrics who remained steadfastly aloof from the poetic movements and fashions of his time, Frost is anything but a merely regional or minor poet. The author of searching and often dark meditations on universal themes, he is a quintessentially modern poet in his adherence to language as it is actually spoken, in the psychological complexity of his portraits, and in the degree to which his work is infused with layers of ambiguity and irony.

Frost drifted through a string of occupations after leaving school, working as a teacher, cobbler, and editor of the Lawrence Sentinel. His first professional poem, "My Butterfly," was published on November 8, 1894, in the New York newspaper The Independent.
In 1895, Frost married Elinor Miriam White, who became a major inspiration in his poetry until her death in 1938. The couple moved to England in 1912, after their New Hampshire farm failed, and it was abroad that Frost met and was influenced by such contemporary British poets as Edward Thomas, Rupert Brooke, and Robert Graves. While in England, Frost also established a friendship with the poet Ezra Pound, who helped to promote and publish his work.

Here are three poems by Robert Frost which I really like:

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Carpe Diem

Age saw two quiet children
Go loving by at twilight,
He knew not whether homeward,
Or outward from the village,
Or (chimes were ringing) churchward,
He waited (they were strangers)
Till they were out of hearing
To bid them both be happy.
"Be happy, happy, happy,
And seize the day of pleasure.
"The age-long theme is Age's.
'Twas Age imposed on poems
Their gather-roses burden
To warn against the danger
That overtaken lovers
From being overflooded
With happiness should have it.
And yet not know they have it.
But bid life seize the present?
It lives less in the present
Than in the future always,
And less in both together
Than in the past. The present
Is too much for the senses,
Too crowding, too confusing—
Too present to imagine.

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

References:
http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/20520
http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/20520

My poem :D

The Road Not Taken - Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

How are the figurative language used in the poem? Give the specific word(s), explain what type of figurative language it is and why the poet chose to use this figurative language?

Tell us why you like this poem in no less than 100 words.

"Two roads diverged" has a figurative meaning. The roads are a symbolism as it symbolises the choices we must make in life. "yellow wood" also symbolises autumnn, and this is made known to us without even told. "ages and ages" is a hyperbole used to signify how long it takes to make the choice. The poet decided to usee these figurative languages as to enhance the depth of the poem without using too much simple and easily-understood words.

I personally like this poem because it has a greater meaning in it. It teaches us to make the correct choice in our life. Even though the road taken is not always the one we want to take, it will always be the correct one which guides us along the way.

Mother's Day

yes, Mother's Day is here and in approximately half an hour's time, it would be over. Born in 1903 to British colonists in Bengal, India, Orwell received his education at a series of private schools, including Eton, an elite school in England. His painful experiences with snobbishness and social elitism at Eton, as well as his intimate familiarity with the reality of British imperialism in India, made him deeply suspicious of the entrenched class system in English society. As a young man, Orwell became a socialist, speaking openly against the excesses of governments east and west and fighting briefly for the socialist cause during the Spanish Civil War, which lasted from 1936 to 1939.

Unlike many British socialists in the 1930s and 1940s, Orwell was not enamored of the Soviet Union and its policies, nor did he consider the Soviet Union a positive representation of the possibilities of socialist society. He could not turn a blind eye to the cruelties and hypocrisies of Soviet Communist Party, which had overturned the semifeudal system of the tsars only to replace it with the dictatorial reign of Joseph Stalin. Orwell became a sharp critic of both capitalism and communism, and is remembered chiefly as an advocate of freedom and a committed opponent of communist oppression. His two greatest anti-totalitarian novels—Animal Farm and 1984—form the basis of his reputation. Orwell died in 1950, only a year after completing 1984, which many consider his masterpiece.

A dystopian novel, 1984 attacks the idea of totalitarian communism (a political system in which one ruling party plans and controls the collective social action of a state) by painting a terrifying picture of a world in which personal freedom is nonexistent. Animal Farm, written in 1945, deals with similar themes but in a shorter and somewhat simpler format. A “fairy story” in the style of Aesop's fables, it uses animals on an English farm to tell the history of Soviet communism. Certain animals are based directly on Communist Party leaders: the pigs Napoleon and Snowball, for example, are figurations of Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky, respectively. Orwell uses the form of the fable for a number of aesthetic and political reasons. To better understand these, it is helpful to know at least the rudiments of Soviet history under Communist Party rule, beginning with the October Revolution of 1917.

In February 1917, Tsar Nicholas II, the monarch of Russia, abdicated and the socialist Alexander Kerensky became premier. At the end of October (November 7 on current calendars), Kerensky was ousted, and Vladimir Lenin, the architect of the Russian Revolution, became chief commissar. Almost immediately, as wars raged on virtually every Russian front, Lenin's chief allies began jockeying for power in the newly formed state; the most influential included Joseph Stalin, Leon Trotsky, Gregory Zinoviev, and Lev Kamenev. Trotsky and Stalin emerged as the most likely heirs to Lenin's vast power. Trotsky was a popular and charismatic leader, famous for his impassioned speeches, while the taciturn Stalin preferred to consolidate his power behind the scenes. After Lenin's death in 1924, Stalin orchestrated an alliance against Trotsky that included himself, Zinoviev, and Kaminev. In the following years, Stalin succeeded in becoming the unquestioned dictator of the Soviet Union and had Trotsky expelled first from Moscow, then from the Communist Party, and finally from Russia altogether in 1936. Trotsky fled to Mexico, where he was assassinated on Stalin's orders in 1940.

In 1934, Stalin's ally Serge Kirov was assassinated in Leningrad, prompting Stalin to commence his infamous purges of the Communist Party. Holding “show trials”—trials whose outcomes he and his allies had already decided—Stalin had his opponents officially denounced as participants in Trotskyist or anti-Stalinist conspiracies and therefore as “enemies of the people,” an appellation that guaranteed their immediate execution. As the Soviet government's economic planning faltered and failed, Russia suffered under a surge of violence, fear, and starvation. Stalin used his former opponent as a tool to placate the wretched populace. Trotsky became a common national enemy and thus a source of negative unity. He was a frightening specter used to conjure horrifying eventualities, in comparison with which the current misery paled. Additionally, by associating his enemies with Trotsky's name, Stalin could ensure their immediate and automatic elimination from the Communist Party.

These and many other developments in Soviet history before 1945 have direct parallels in Animal Farm: Napoleon ousts Snowball from the farm and, after the windmill collapses, uses Snowball in his purges just as Stalin used Trotsky. Similarly, Napoleon becomes a dictator, while Snowball is never heard from again. Orwell was inspired to write Animal Farm in part by his experiences in a Trotskyist group during the Spanish Civil War, and Snowball certainly receives a more sympathetic portrayal than Napoleon. But though Animal Farm was written as an attack on a specific government, its general themes of oppression, suffering, and injustice have far broader application; modern readers have come to see Orwell's book as a powerful attack on any political, rhetorical, or military power that seeks to control human beings unjustly.

Historical Context

Russian society in the early twentieth century was bipolar: a tiny minority controlled most of the country's wealth, while the vast majority of the country's inhabitants were impoverished and oppressed peasants. Communism arose in Russia when the nation's workers and peasants, assisted by a class of concerned intellectuals known as the intelligentsia, rebelled against and overwhelmed the wealthy and powerful class of capitalists and aristocrats. They hoped to establish a socialist utopia based on the principles of the German economic and political philosopher Karl Marx.

In Das Kapital (Capital), Marx advanced an economically deterministic interpretation of human history, arguing that society would naturally evolve—from a monarchy and aristocracy, to capitalism, and then on to communism, a system under which all property would be held in common. The dignity of the poor workers oppressed by capitalism would be restored, and all people would live as equals. Marx followed this sober and scholarly work with The Communist Manifesto, an impassioned call to action that urged, “Workers of the world, unite!”

In the Russia of 1917, it appeared that Marx's dreams were to become reality. After a politically complicated civil war, Tsar Nicholas II, the monarch of Russia, was forced to abdicate the throne that his family had held for three centuries. Vladimir Ilych Lenin, a Russian intellectual revolutionary, seized power in the name of the Communist Party. The new regime took land and industry from private control and put them under government supervision. This centralization of economic systems constituted the first steps in restoring Russia to the prosperity it had known before World War I and in modernizing the nation's primitive infrastructure, including bringing electricity to the countryside. After Lenin died in 1924, Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky jockeyed for control of the newly formed Soviet Union. Stalin, a crafty and manipulative politician, soon banished Trotsky, an idealistic proponent of international communism. Stalin then began to consolidate his power with brutal intensity, killing or imprisoning his perceived political enemies and overseeing the purge of approximately twenty million Soviet citizens.

From: Sparknotes

Last Tuesday, I went with Wei Zhi (who is not from our group) to the Toa Payoh Care Corner to start our language exchange programme with the elderly at the centre. Wei Zhi was responsible in taking the photos while i gave the lessons.

There were approximately 12 senior citizens that came for the english lesson. out of the 9 I surveyed, 6 showed great interest in paricipating in this language exchange programme as they feel it is good to learn some basic english to communicate with the younger generation today. I feel that it our programme would be a success.

As it was the first time that I had went down to teach and to speak in front of so many elderly, I was a bit nervous and stumbled on my words occasionally, but i managed to get most of them participating although some of them were not as eager. I felt a sense of achievement when they clapped after I finish my lesson.

For my lesson, I think I would only give myself 6/10 as there was room for improvement. All in all, i think our language exchange programme would be a great success and I hope that the elderly would learn english from us, while we learn dialect from them.

Chinese quote of the day: 活到老，学到老！！！

~ Wei Ren

Video about twitter:

Nowadays, many teenagers are using tweeter as a way to keep up with their friends anywhere. Even adults and elderly are using twitter. What is twitter exactly, you may ask now.

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length which are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow anybody to access them. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, SMS or applications. The service is free to use over the Internet, but using SMS may incur phone service provider fees.

As you see, it is a very accessable thing everywhere, even if you are on the go, on a mrt train, or waiting for somebody. Thus it is greatly understandable that Twitter, which was first creted in 2006, can reach out to such a huge mass of people today. (Btw, I have a twitter account too :P)
Since its creation in 2006, Twitter has gained extensive notability and popularity worldwide. It is often described as the "SMS of Internet," in that the site provides the functionality (via its application programming interfaces) for other desktop and web-based applications to send and receive short text messages, often obscuring the Twitter service itself.

Oh I forgot to post about the visit to toa payoh care corner on tuesday afternoon. Last Tuesday, me, xin jie, zheng jie and jaron went to toa payoh lorong 7 block 5 to do some CIP and for our projects day. (NOTE: JARON IS NOT IN OUR PROJECT GROUP. YI PIN IS(:) anw we took 157 there at around 2.30, in hope of finding some of my nygh frens(: (evil grin....) When we arrived at the Toa Payoh care corner, we contemplated on wether we should have went in the first place. After a while, we stepped into the centre, warmly greeted by the person-in-charge, ms lim. She showed us around, and afterwords, we mingled with the senior citizens at the centre and it was a joy to talk to them, as we told them about life in hwa chong, and asked about them. At around 4, we started to clean up the kitchen at the centre for them, and under the supervision of a kind uncle, we cleaned up the kitchen in no time. We had also helped to clean the HUGE glass panel outside the kitchen and it was quite enjoyable as we worked together. I learnt that only if we work together, we will be able to be productive and increasing the rate of work(: At around 4.45, we left the centre, promising them we will be back(: Left for toa payoh hub, took 157 back home with zheng jie, while jaron and xin jie took the mrt home. Had a great day, enjoyed it, hope we will get into the semi finals after the second prelims.

Some pictures i took:

Pray for me and my group. All the animals on the farm, except Moses the tame raven, go to the large barn for the meeting. At the meeting, prize winning pig Old Major tells all the animals of a dream he had the night before. In the dream, all animals were free from human oppression, living happily and well fed. Then Old Major incites the animals to rise up against the humans to let all animals live in harmony. He also tells them not to adopt any traits of the humans, which is stated in the seven commandments.
